Founder’s Note

To the reader who arrived here
looking for something more than a list.

I studied at METU. I learned there that imprecise language is epistemologically limiting — that the word you choose shapes the thought you can have, and the thought you can have shapes the encounter you are capable of. This applies to travel writing as much as it applies to anything else, and it is the reason this platform exists in the form it does rather than in the form that most travel platforms take.

Most travel content tells you where to go and what to see. The Cyprus Gusto tells you how to look — and why the looking matters. There is a difference between the visitor who arrives at Bellapais with forty minutes and a camera, and the visitor who arrives having read Durrell and Ruskin and Weil, who knows what the pointed arch is doing in a Mediterranean landscape and why the acoustic of the refectory is not accidental. The island gives both visitors the same stone. It does not give them the same encounter.

Before anything appears on this platform, I apply three questions to it. First: does it have architectural or cultural honesty — does it represent what it actually is rather than what it wants visitors to believe it is? Second: does it have cultural continuity — is it still connected to the tradition from which it emerged, or has it been severed from that tradition and preserved only as aesthetic? Third: does it produce lasting change in the person who encounters it — does the encounter leave them with a different quality of perception, or only with a pleasant memory?

One hundred essays later, I am still asking the same three questions. The island continues to pass all three. I do not expect this to change.
